The sea port of Arkhangelsk , the largest port in the North
European part of Russia, was founded more than 400 years ago in the mouth of the
Northern Dvina river, flowing into the White Sea. It is geographically situated
6 4 degrees 33 minutes North and 40 degrees 32 minutes East. Another name of the
port is "the gates to the Arctic" since it was the starting point of the
Northern sea route as well as of all important Polar expeditions, the Arctic
being developed and supplied from the piers of the port too.
Within the years of the Second World War it was the only port in Russia where
weapons, foodstuffs, medicaments and equipment were being regularly delivered to.
Arkhangelsk is a port of all - the year- round navigation .
Ice situation in the White Sea is alike that one in the Gulf of Finland ,
vessels being conducted with the help of ice-breakers from the middle of January
up to the middle of April. Iice-breakers are due to be used in the water area of
the harbour from December up to the middle of April.
The Arkhangelsk sea port is available for vessels having the
draught of 9,2 m, up to 175 m in length and 30 m beam athwartships There are 151
berths which are more than 17548 metres in length, including 31 berths which
belong to wood processing plants, 22 - to the sea commercial port, 6 - to the
river port, 3 - to JSC "Rosneft" through which oil as well as oil products are
handled designated outwards , 2 - to the fishing port and 87 smaller berths to
different other industries.
To provide vessels with services within the harbour there are
tugs with the output of 2500 horse power, fuelers, water-carriers, garbage
barges as well as barges for oily bilge waters, sludge and sewage.
All kinds of services are rendered in the port.
In the year 2002 the turnover of the port totalled 3500
thousand tons, 1900 thousand of which amount - oil products for export, 700
thousand - saw-timber for export and about 100 thousand - coal for export. The
remaining amounted various ingoing as well as outgoing general cargoes . Lately
the port used to handle large volumes of ingoing grain , but presently there is
no grain purchased to be handled here.
Cargoes for export and import are timber products, ferrous and non-ferrous
metals, metal- rolls, tubes, cardboard, cellulose, equipment, containers, coal,
chemical and hazardous cargoes.
OAO "Arkhangelsk sea commercial port" has capacities
available for handling up to 4,5 mln tons of differentl cargoes , only 25-30% of
them being actually employed that makes the port most advantageous over the
other ones. The port possesses up-to-date handling facilities with the cargo
lifting capacity of portal cranes up to 40 tons, container stackers up to 30,5
tons, a floating crane up to 100 tons, forklifts from 1,5 up to 10 tons, flat
beds as well as other specialized facilities. There is a special container
terminal for handling ISO containers.
The port provides services to three rail terminals where
cargoes arrive and are dispatched from both by rail or by road to any
destination in Russia or CIS countries. Transit cargoes are enrouted from Europe
to the countries of the Far, Middle and Near East via the port of Arkhangelsk as
well.
