In the system of the Northern Railway there are 65 thousand
people directly engaged in transportation of cargoes and passengers as well. The
railwaypeople both the managerial staff and workers are experienced specialists
capable of solving problems related to arrangements needed for transportation of
cargoes and passengers. The network of the Northern Railway lines covers a vast
region of 50 mln hectares where the rail transport is historically the main kind
of traffic used.At present the railway personnel marshals, equips and dispatches
about 40 passenger and 136 local trains per day,over 3,5 thousand wagons or
186,3 thousand tons of goods being stuffed every 24 hours.
Taking into consideration the volumes of cargoes moved the
Northern Railway is among the most intensive main-lines of the railway industry.
80 % of goods being transported are: coal, oil products, timber and building
materials,ferrous metals and mineral fertilizers.
Over a guarter of all Russian timber goods moved falls on the Northern Railway
lines.
For technical maintanance, repairs of machinery there
available are 12 locomotive depots,14 wagon depots inclusive of 2 units for
repairing passenger wagons,32 railway divisions, 12 line machine stations,12
signalling and communication divisions,8 divisions of electrical supply, 6
divisions for cargo handling operations, 6 divisions of civil construction. The
Northern railroad system comprises 397 stations including 5 large marshalling
yards with handling capacity from 2 to 6 thousand goods vans per day.Stations
are rail connected by 1113 spur tracks over 5,0 thousand km in length.
In 2002 about 68 mln tons of goods were carried by railway
which amount was by 8,0% more than in the previous year, the turnover increased
by 9,7 %,the passenger turnover rise being 25,1 %.

The Arkhangelsk Subdivision.
The town of Arkhangelsk is a large transport center which
links tightly together railway, sea, river, motor and air transport.It is
difficult to overvalue the importance of the Arkhangelsk Subdivision of the
Northern Railway. Its personnel provides the
delivery of cargoes to ports from which they are due to be shipped to
settlements along the Arctic coast and foreign countries by the Northern Sea
route. Freight flow by railway lines to inland destinations of Russia gets under
way from sea. The Arkhangelsk Subdivision meets all transport requests of the
State Centre of the atomic shipbuilding in Severodvinsk and space drome
"Plesetsk". The Arkhangelsk Subdivision is closely associating with water
transport industries such as the Arkhangelsk sea commercial port and the
Arkhangelsk river port.
The Arkhangelsk sea commercial port has three cargo handling
terminals (Economiya, Bakaritsa, Levy Bereg)which are rail connected with r/w
stations Arkhangelsk- gorod(town), Bakaritsa, Arkhangelsk- Levy bereg
accordingly. The cargo handling terminal of the Arkhangelsk river port is rail
connected with the r/w station Jaravikha.
Railways are lined onto the piers that allows to carry out
loading and unloading operations directly onto/out of the vessels.
The railway stations Arkhangelsk-gorod and Bakaritsa have wagon scales making it
possible to weigh any types of wagons with or w/o uncoupling available.
